Iridium partnered with us to support the launch of its GM DSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) solution—an advanced satellite communication product designed to enhance safety at sea. The challenge was clear: translate an incredibly complex, highly technical system into a compelling, accessible narrative that could resonate with a broad audience.

The Challenge

GM DSS represents a significant leap forward in maritime safety, but like many cutting-edge technologies, its value isn’t immediately obvious to non-specialist audiences. Iridium needed a way to:

  • Clearly communicate the product’s purpose and importance

  • Demystify technical concepts without oversimplifying

  • Build awareness and confidence in a critical, life-saving system

  • Engage stakeholders across varying levels of technical understanding

Our Approach

We approached the project with a “simplify without losing substance” mindset—distilling complexity into clarity through design, motion, and storytelling.

At the heart of the solution was a fully bespoke explainer animation. Rather than relying on stock assets or generic visuals, we crafted a unique visual language from the ground up:

  • Custom Illustration: Every element was designed specifically for this project, ensuring visual consistency and clarity across complex concepts

  • Purpose-built Animation: Illustrations were created with motion in mind, allowing us to seamlessly animate technical processes and abstract systems

  • Narrative-led Structure: We developed a clear, structured story that guided viewers step-by-step through the product’s functionality and benefits
